I am a US political tragic, I subscribe, follow and listen to pretty much everything and talk to everyone. I listen to all reasonable commentators from all sides, on the state of politics of Australia’s strongest ally.
US politics is a machine and a whirlwind that creates its own economic industry. More tech innovations and advancements come from USA political elections than any other staged or organised event ever.
More insights are generated, market research and polling jumps to new levels, and digital campaigning and data gets more and more insightful.
More understanding is generated about what people really want, the decisions they make and how representational democracy should work better.
It truly is ‘the big show’.
I was lucky to spend close to 3 months working on the Romney Presidential campaign out of Boston in 2012. I was part of the digital team, learning, learning and learning. It was one of the best things I have ever done in my life.
As a political professional, my top 2 things on my list of ‘very cool shit I have done’ have occurred in the US:
Sitting in on Presidential debate ‘war rooms’ in the 2012 Presidential campaign
Spending 45 minutes with the Chief of Staff to John Boehner, in his Capitol Hill office (Boehner was Speaker of the USA House of Representatives at the time)
I have been very fortunate to have many great friends and colleagues in US politics. They have all helped and inspired me in so many ways. I also found that they love Australians and our way of life.
So, in my first ever blog for Uncommon Asymmetry, I’m going to share a photo of my RNC Campaign Management College Certificate. I’m damn proud of this one, it was 6 days of hard work with such an amazing group of people.
While I learnt so much, the best thing I came away with was a heap of friends from the course. From Florida, Texas, California, New England, Ohio and more, these smart, Republican campaigners – and teachers - really inspired me and for many, we stay in touch.
So, as this is my first blog I hope it’s insightful you have taken something from it. I look forward to any comments and feedback….
